"In New York, Concrete jungle where
dreams are made of There's nothin' you can't do Now you're in New York These streets will make you
feel brand new Big lights will inspire you Let's hear it for
New York, New York, New York..."
I know that more than once someone, somewhere out there also had sang this chorus to the song Empire State of Mind by Alicia Keys & Jay-Z on repeat just like me. I got a music-filled glimpse of what New York City really is because of listening and singing this song a zillion times before and I do admit that I still sing this song numerous times these days.
New York City is called the Empire State because of its wealth and variety of resources. And it is also known as the CITY THAT NEVER SLEEPS, why? Because this city has a lot to offer. You can do anything and almost everything in a variety of ways.
24/7, 52 weeks, 365 days, 1 year.
Every second and every minute of your time will not be put into waste when you are in NYC. It will be put into a fun-filled action.
Last October 3, 2018 I got the chance to go to NYC and explore the wonders of it all throughout the week.
I was with my fellow intern Marianne who is from Norway and two of the most wonderful GBCS Staffs, Laura and Rebecca.
When we arrived in NYC WE dropped our bags at The Marriot Hotel and went straight ahead to East Harlem (LUKE CAGEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!) which is also known as the Spanish Harlem. This is the place where Latinx, Latino, Latina, Hispanic, and some Black people live.
Upon seeing the streets of East Harlem I was filled with awe and admiration for the WILD, BOLD, AND BIG street art that I don't usually see in the Philippines. Street art that almost comprise one whole wall or one tall building that you can see it even if you are in the corner of a street.
The love for art can be seen in the tall school buildings, restaurant walls, and even just on the sidewalks. And yes, it's legal.
Take a look at this:

A day after the fun and vibrant East Harlem adventure we were able to go to the United Nations Headquarters.
The United Nations has 193 countries who are member states and 2 countries which are the Holy See and Palestine who are non-member observer states.
The main goal of the United Nations is to maintain world peace and security through developing relationship among nations, fostering cooperation between one another in order to solve economic, social, cultural, or humanitarian problems around the globe.

The main organs of the UN are the General Assembly, the Security Council, the Economic and Social Council, the Trusteeship Council, the International Court of Justice, and the UN Secretariat.
The General Assembly is the main deliberative, policy making, and representative organ of the UN where all 193 member states are represented, making it the only UN body with universal representation.
The Security Council has a primary role under the UN Charter and that is to maintain peace and security. It has 15 members wherein 5 are the permanent members and 10 are the non-permanent members.
The Economic and Social Council is the principal body for coordination, policy review, policy dialogue and recommendations on economic, social and environmental issues, as well as implementation of internationally agreed development goals.
The Trusteeship Council was established in 1945 by the UN Charter to provide international supervision for 11 Trust Territories that had been placed under the administration of seven Member States, and ensure that adequate steps were taken to prepare the Territories for self-government and independence. By 1994, all Trust Territories had attained self-government or independence. The Trusteeship Council suspended operation on 1 November 1994.
The International Court of Justice is the principal judicial organ of the UN. The Court’s role is to settle, in accordance with international law, legal disputes submitted to it by States and to give advisory opinions on legal questions referred to it by authorized United Nations organs and specialized agencies.
The Secretariat includes the Secretary-General and tens of thousands of international UN staff members who carry out the day-to-day work of the UN as mandated by the General Assembly and the Organization's other principal organs. The Secretary-General is the Chief Administrative Officer of the Organization, appointed by the General Assembly on the recommendation of the Security Council for a five-year, renewable term. UN staff members are recruited internationally and locally, and work in duty stations and on peacekeeping missions all around the world.

When we went inside the UN Headquarters we were able to see some of the places where member states gather.

We also had the chance to see the Brooklyn Bridge and the Statue of Liberty.

Seeing the Brooklyn Bridge and Statue of Liberty was very surreal. It was an achievement for me to step in New York. I got the glimpse of why the city never really sleeps. It gave me a moment to dream with sugar, spice, and everything with sparkle.
I also got to see the famous Central Park and its natural beauty. Amidst the crowd it shines bright with the clear skies and cool breeze.

While in Central Park I got to taste the famous Wafels & Dinges. I got the nutella and chocolate wafel which was super good.

Our New York fun wouldn't be superb if we didn't went to the Brooklyn Museum.
Brooklyn Museum is located at 200 Eastern Pkwy, Brooklyn, NY 11238. It is an art museum located in the New York City borough of Brooklyn. The museum is New York City's third largest in physical size and holds an art collection with roughly 1.5 million works.

Going to New York City made me realized that sugar, spice, and sparkle can really be felt and lived. Seeing the lights, people, and wonders of NYC made me feel happy. It made me dream again.
Dream bigger. Dream bolder. Dream like a New Yorker.
